How One Email Almost Cost Me Everything

Why your reputation is your most valuable business asset.

A while back, I sent an email that I thought was clever.

It was bold.
A little edgy.
Definitely attention-grabbing.

And then… the replies rolled in.

“Wow. Didn’t expect that tone from you.”

“Honestly felt kinda off-brand.”

“Love your stuff, but this one rubbed me the wrong way.”

That’s when it hit me:

I was so focused on getting a reaction, I forgot what matters most:

Reputation is leverage.
Reputation is currency.
Reputation is the one asset that follows you everywhere.

As Warren Buffett famously said:

“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it.
If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”

I sure did.

That day, I re-committed to building a reputation I’d be proud of.

Helpful. Honest. Human.

And guess what?

It didn’t just feel better—it converted better too.

Because people don’t follow perfect brands.
They follow people they trust.

⚡️ One-Minute Mindset Shift

You’re Always Building Something

Every tweet. Every DM. Every client interaction.

It’s either adding to your reputation—or subtracting from it.

Ask yourself:

  • “What do I want people to say about me when I’m not in the room?”

  • “Would my future self be proud of how I handled this?”

  • “Am I chasing hype… or building something with weight?”

Play the long game.
Reputation scales beyond any campaign.

🛠️ Daily Hustl Hack

The “Reputation Filter”

Use this before hitting send, saying yes, or showing up online:

  1. Would I be okay with this going viral?
    The internet never forgets.

  2. Does this align with my values?
If not—you’re off brand, even if it's "on trend."

  3. Will this build trust with the right people?
Not everyone needs to like you. Just the ones that matter.

One decision at a time. That’s how reputations are made.
